A Local Station Becomes A Global Arts Platform
THE INSIGHT
Classical music has spent the last decade confronting its own relevance, moving from a visual language built on exclusivity toward one built on accessibility, a place where anyone could find themselves. That reckoning now collides with a harder one, public radio facing the deepest funding cuts in a generation, with some 15% of local stations at risk of closing within three years, and the most vulnerable being those without a clear strategic roadmap. All Classical enters that moment from real strength, a community funded model never wholly dependent on federal subsidy, and decades of trust with Portland listeners that no algorithm can replicate, though strength was never going to be immunity, only a stronger place to build from. The station had already solved the hardest part, genuinely global impact, but it looked provincial, small in a way its reach never was, and it was time the brand caught up with a sound that had long since broken free of geography.
THE IDEA
Classical music begins as one idea, a feeling scribbled on a page, but the moment it reaches an audience it stops belonging to anyone, becoming communal, then universal, and we built the identity around that generosity, reducing the logo to a single, hardworking C, at once a sound wave, a performer, an audience, a community. The name changed too, All Classical Portland becoming All Classical Radio, a small edit that said everything, no longer defined by where it broadcast from, but by what it broadcast to the world. The colour palette drew on Robert Delaunay's studies in contrast, earthy tones set against high intensity coral, lime and Klein blue, brave combinations that feel unexpected yet timeless, while the typography stayed Swiss and minimal, letting colour and the C carry the emotion instead. Built as an open system across print, digital, architecture and merchandise, and grounded in a free image library of abstract art, nature and architecture in place of costly photography, the design gave a publicly funded nonprofit the range of a global media brand.
THE IMPACT
By December 2023, All Classical Radio had risen from the fourth most listened to music station in the US to the first, growing earned media by over 86% along the way. The station hit its fundraising targets year on year despite a recession and widespread layoffs across the radio industry, and secured its largest state grant in forty years of operation, $750,000, alongside a rise in private donor support.
